Palm Springs,CA - Weekend Retreat
Conceived as a weekend retreat, this five-bedroom residence is organized around a square swimming pool that forms the spatial and experiential center of the home. Its central position allows areas of sunlight and shade to move across the water throughout the day, creating varied conditions for relaxation and outdoor living.
The residence is divided into two principal wings, separating the public and private functions. The public wing accommodates the main living space, an intimate sitting area, a library, and an open-plan kitchen. The kitchen serves as the connecting element between the primary gathering spaces and opens directly onto a sheltered courtyard designed for outdoor dining.
The two wings are separated by the main entrance on one side and an open-air living room on the opposite side. A linear fireplace defines this exterior space and frames uninterrupted views toward the surrounding desert mountains.
Circulation is arranged along the perimeter of the swimming pool, while the principal rooms occupy the outer edge of the floor plan. This configuration establishes a continuous visual relationship between the interiors, the water, and the surrounding landscape.
At each of the four corners, the transition from the circulation corridor into the adjacent rooms is marked by a skylight and a large indoor-outdoor planter. These landscaped elements are illuminated from above, allowing sunlight to graze the vegetation and surrounding surfaces as it shifts throughout the day.
The linear corridors terminate in carefully framed views of the gardens and the distant mountain horizon, reinforcing the home’s connection to nature. A lush landscape composed of desert-adapted planting provides privacy and softens the architecture. At night, the illuminated gardens become the primary visual backdrop, creating a calm and atmospheric setting when the mountains recede into darkness.
The private wing contains five bedrooms, each arranged around its own secluded outdoor area. These intimate courtyards extend the living spaces into the landscape while providing privacy, natural light, and a direct connection to the desert environment.
